If you operate a busy family, bathrooms are always in demand. Somebody always seems to want to use them at any given hour of the day. Therefore, how many bathrooms you have in your home is an important financial consideration. How many do you need, exactly?
The answer to that question depends heavily on who you ask – as you might expect. Generally, though, you’ll want at least one bathroom for every two bedrooms. So, if you have four bedrooms, that’s two bathrooms.
You’ll often see in homes with five bedrooms that they have two full bathrooms and then a small cloakroom.
Factors That Affect How Many Bathrooms You Should Have
There are several factors that affect how many bathrooms you should have, so the above figure is not set in stone.
For instance, if you plan on selling your property in the near future, the number of bathrooms it has will affect the resale value. Buyers often want properties that have bathrooms attached to every bedroom.
You may also need more bathrooms if you plan on regularly entertaining guests. Guests will generally want their own bathrooms instead of sharing with the rest of the family.
You also want to consider the size of your family. The above rule of one bathroom for every two bedrooms only applies in situations where the average number of people in each bedroom is around 1.5. If you have two or more children in each bedroom, then the number of bathrooms you’ll need goes up dramatically. The number increases further if you have adult guests staying with you, as they will probably want one bathroom between them.
The last factor you might want to consider is whether there are elderly people staying with you. If there are, then you may want to increase the number of bathrooms you have in your property. That’s because older people tend to take longer in bathrooms than others in your household.
Considerations When Adding Bathrooms
When adding a bathroom to your home, you’ll need to consider several factors.
The first is the size of the bathroom. Sometimes you can fit small bathrooms into your existing home floor plan by sectioning off parts of it. However, larger designs may require an extension.
You’ll also want to consider design features.
Questions you’ll want to ask yourself include:
- What are the major differences between wall tiles and shower panels? And how will they affect your budget?
- Do you just need a toilet and a sink, or do you need a shower and bathtub as well?
- Can you place the bathrooms next to bedrooms as ensuites, or will they need to be separate?
- Do you need more than four bathrooms?
- Should every bedroom have a bathroom?
Generally, adding bathrooms to your home is a good idea because it increases the value of your property. Many wealthy families have more bathrooms than bedrooms. However, it is still important to consider whether your home really needs it. Always choose a bathroom that meets the most pressing needs.
