Journaling offers a method of therapy as an outlet for your child to express their thoughts and feelings while allowing them to keep a record of their day. There are many ways that journaling can benefit your child from their state of mind to their development. We have teamed up with a private school in Harrow to share more on the benefits of journaling for kids.
Gaining Perspective
By writing about thoughts, feelings and events, your child can look at them from different points of view. This can help them to exercise empathy, understand the impact of their actions and become more emotionally intelligent.
Practising Mindfulness
In writing this down, your child is also able to recognise and confront their feelings. Expelling them onto a piece of paper can also create a sense of relief for your child and allow them to talk about their feelings even when they aren’t ready to express them to others. This can help them to make the necessary life changes needed to improve their mental health and live a happier life.
An Enjoyment for Writing
By giving your child complete autonomy over what to write about outside of the classroom, you can fuel their love for writing. Many established authors have also talked about how much they used to enjoy journaling as a child. By practising their writing skills, your child can achieve much more in other subjects too aside from English. Writing skills such as reasoning are needed for essay writing and answering exam questions.
Improved Reading
Journaling can also help your child with their reading by allowing them to make connections with different sounds and getting them to think about their spellings.
Stimulating Creativity
In journaling, your child can find their writing style and write about the creative ideas that they’ve had throughout the day that would have otherwise been forgotten. It creates space to share those ‘eureka’ moments and allows your child to explore them in more detail.
