Writing is an important skill, not just for school students but throughout life. It’s something that can be practised and improved upon overtime, and some people are naturally better than it than others. If you are looking for ways to help your child develop their writing skills, here are some tips from a prep school in Kent.
Encourage Your Child to Read
Reading helps children learn new vocabulary, because they will be exposed to new words in different contexts. It also familiarises them with different sentence structures and the correct use of punctuation. With that said, encouraging your child to read should, in turn, help them become better writers. Let them pick out their own books so that reading appeals to their interests, otherwise they will find it boring.
Ask Your Child to Start a Journal
Buy your child a nice big notebook and ask them to start journaling. This is great for their writing skills but can also help them work through their thoughts and express themselves creatively. You could also encourage them to write down some of the things they’re grateful for to help them with their appreciation of life.
Make Writing a Game
Encouraging your child to practise writing outside of school will be challenging if you don’t make it enjoyable for them. With that said, try and turn it into a game. For instance, you could get them to pretend they are a reporter or a journalist and ask them to interview a friend or a relative and then write up the answers as a news report or auto-biography. If they have recently finished reading a book, you could ask them to write a review.
Ensure Your Child Has Plenty of Writing Tools
Make sure your child has a desk equipped with plenty of paper, notebooks and lots of coloured pens and pencils so that they have all of the necessary tools to write. Without the necessary equipment, they won’t want to write.
